Basic First Aid Practices

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)

  • Adults: 30 compressions (2 inches deep) followed by 2 rescue breaths. Keep a rhythm of 100–120 compressions per minute.
  • Children (1–8 yrs): Use one hand for compressions. Maintain the 30:2 ratio.
  • Infants: Use 2 fingers for chest compressions. Deliver gentle breaths with care.

Control Bleeding

  • Minor Bleeding: Apply direct pressure with clean gauze. Elevate the wound.
  • Severe Bleeding: Use a cloth or sterile pad. If bleeding persists, apply a tourniquet above the wound and call emergency services.

Treating Burns

  • Minor Burns: Cool with running water for 10–15 minutes. Cover with a clean, dry dressing.
  • Severe Burns: Do NOT use ice or creams. Cover with a non-stick cloth and seek emergency help.
  • Electrical Burns: Ensure power is off before touching the victim. Then call for emergency assistance.

Choking

  • Adults & Children: Perform abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver).
  • Infants: 5 back blows followed by 5 chest compressions. Keep their head lower than the body.

Fractures and Sprains

  • Fractures: Do not move the injured part. Immobilize with a splint or sturdy object.
  • Sprains: Follow the R.I.C.E. method – Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.
